Anxiety And Our Children
June 7
Our children, preschoolers, adolescents and teens are not exempt from anxiety disorders and panic attacks. In fact 10% suffer from anxiety.
We tend to think of the ‘childhood years’ as carefree, where there is no stress or anxiety. But if we think back to our childhood many of us see that this is not always the case. Starting at a very young age children experience lots of issues that could bring on phobias and anxiety disorders.
Everything from family problems (divorce, abuse, job losses with the parents, etc.) to making friends, peer pressure and the fear of embarrassment or humiliation and not being part of the ‘in crowd’. And all of these things can bring on stress, depression and anxiety disorders including general anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, social phobia and obsessive compulsive disorder.
More so than in years past children often live with single parents, spend too much time with computers and games and watch way too much TV as many parents don’t have time for their kids,…or don’t make time for their kids. With so much going on in the lives of parents (jobs, terrible marriages, other kids, and more) children and teens tend to be ‘forgotten’.
If we, as parents, don’t recognize these problems in our kids lives, the problem usually gets worse and they get into worse problems (they escape life and live a life of isolation, get in with the ‘wrong crowd’, start skipping school, start using alcohol, drugs or both)… or even worse.
